[Repair] Why won’t a diesel generator start?

Xi’anMotor RepairOur factory specializes in repairing all types of domestic and imported generator sets. Now, let’s discuss the reasons why a diesel generator fails to start! Causes include: unsmooth engine fuel lines, abnormal cylinder compression, overly viscous lubricating oil, air trapped inside the fuel pump, exhausted fuel supply, clogged or air-leaking fuel supply lines, substandard fuel quality, non-operational stop valve (or fuel solenoid valve), non-operational actuator or excessively low governor lever opening, no output signal from the speed controller board to the actuator, no feedback signal from the speed sensor, intake pipe blockage, exhaust pipe blockage; and other faults. Details are as follows:

Analysis of Causes for Diesel Generator Failure to Start

1. Unsmooth engine fuel lines: Check whether the engine fuel lines are unobstructed. If you hear a “hissing” sound from the fuel injector, the fuel lines are likely fine.

2. Cylinder compression: Check cylinder compression. If the flywheel can still rotate after releasing the decompression device, cylinder compression is faulty—replace the cylinder piston and piston rings.

3. Lubricating oil: Replace lubricating oil regularly; overly viscous oil hinders smooth engine startup.

4. Fuel pump: Check whether air is present inside the fuel pump; if so, the diesel engine will fail to start.

5. Exhausted fuel: Refill the fuel tank with sufficient clean fuel.

6. Clogged or air-leaking fuel supply lines: Fill the fuel filter with fuel, purge air from the fuel supply lines, and ensure all shut-off valves in the fuel supply lines are fully open.

7. Non-operational stop valve (or fuel solenoid valve): Inspect the power supply wiring of the stop valve (or fuel solenoid valve) to ensure secure and reliable connections; verify its operational status—confirm it functions normally when supplied with proper operating voltage.

8. Non-operational actuator: Inspect the actuator’s power supply wiring to ensure secure and reliable connections; verify its operational status—confirm it functions normally when supplied with proper operating voltage.

9. Excessively low governor lever opening: Inspect the governor lever to ensure its opening position is no less than 2/3 of the actuator’s effective stroke.

10. No output signal from speed controller board to actuator: During startup, measure whether the speed controller board’s operating power supply is normal; measure the voltage signal output by the speed controller board to the actuator.

11. No feedback signal from speed sensor: Measure whether the speed sensor’s feedback signal is normal; inspect the wiring between the speed sensor and the speed controller board for secure and reliable connections; remove the speed sensor and check whether its sensing head is damaged; measure the sensor’s resistance value; verify whether the speed sensor’s installation meets specifications.

12. Intake pipe or exhaust pipe blockage: Inspect the engine’s intake piping to ensure unobstructed airflow; inspect the engine’s exhaust piping to ensure unobstructed exhaust flow.
